How can Design be an inclusive activity?

Design itself, for me, is already an inclusive activity. We already indirectly take in the target audience/viewers as part of the team to make the design come to life. We gather data, do field research, and collaborate with other designers with diverse skillsets and world view. Design is for, from, and with people. It is a holistic experience in a society. As Natasha Jen said, in creating a good design, one must put trust in people. To regard them as intelligent viewers that will constantly demand more. That is the way of how humans improve. One example is how LEGO invites consumers to create new designs from their product and will be made into an official Lego design. This creates limitless possibilities that would keep the brand and its relationship with customers alive. IKEA lets customers build their own furnitures to give us the experience and show us a glimpse of how these furnitures are designed and made.

It’s all a collective experience between designers with viewers, designers with designers and viewers with viewers. The way design brings impact to the viewers can also be a collective experience between different viewers coming together. One example is We’re Not Really Strangers. Their product is a card game and they promote it across different social medias with different type of engagements. The brand constantly brings up conversations to be had between their audience. And that interaction itself makes up their brand image. Of how different people coming together or how people can rekindle long lost relationships.

  5. is this signal something we want to actualise? is it a good signal?

  6. as a designer, how can i be part to influence that change?

My research question : How can Indonesian cinema take over the global entertainment the way South Korea did?

Title : Ambil Alih Perfilman Dunia : A Theoretical Analysis on the Future Rise of Indonesian Cinema

  1. The growth in Indonesian cinema represents the rise of education and awareness towards societal issues in Indonesia

  2. The social acceptance towards social issue narratives in younger generations who are more open-minded, critical, and forward thinking. Indonesia is exporting their movies in order to preserve culture in the midst of Western media domination.

  3. The recent conflict within Indonesia where RUU TPKS, a legislation that protects victims of sexual abuse, had not been approved and applied within the country, despite the amount of sexual abuse reports submitted. The current sensation on Korean entertainment is a beacon for Southeast Asian countries to also step forward.

  4. Indonesian cinema would replace the Korean entertainment in a way where the movies would resonate with the global audience. With the current pattern being Indonesia more focusing on social issue narratives for their movies, I think this would bring more awareness and change to countries that face the same issue.

  5. With the rapid growth of technology and social media, Indonesian movies are getting more exposure, therefore receiving supports from not just locals, but global audience. I think that minorities, victims, and silenced people will feel represented. One example would be acceptance towards Chinese Indonesians within the country by knowing their stories and trauma. This is showcased in the movie 'Cek Toko Sebelah'.

  6. I think that designers can absolutely partake in this growth. Designers are not only graphic designers but they are set designers, costume designers, interior designers. This would expand more job prospects and bring forwards the creative industry in Indonesia.
