Week 2 - How does change happen?

Updated: Sep 9, 2022

There are many types of changes. changes in media. changes in entertainment, changes in politics. change can happen when people are un-satisfied and angry. Examples would be the feminist movement and women empowerment that leads to various of communities and platform. changes can happen when situations need it. COVID-19, virtual school, meetings, staying at home, leads to trends on TikTok, the popular use of full screen vertical video ratio. affects attention span of the audience. it creates ripples to other medias as well.

What is the most significant change I've gone through in the past 10 years?

I used to be only interested in drawing traditionally with pencil and charcoal, All I ever wanted was to draw and make illustrations. But i was given an ipad and tried procreate, then I fell in love with digital drawings. Like I said, I constantly try to challenge myself to get out of my comfort zone, so I got in to Diploma in Illustration Design with Animation. I wanted to learn new things such as storyboarding, character and environment design, storybuilding. why? Because I figured that I wouldn’t survive or succeed with only my drawing hobby. I saw how design has played a big part in various forms of media like entertainment, social media, business. I want to learn how it gets to that point. Besides that, I also got the opportunity to be assigned to the graphics department in Broadway Malyan. There I learned how design can actually help and change people’s lives. So that is why I chose the path of Design Practice. I find myself wanting to learn and care more and I think it is one of the biggest changes I had in my life.

———————————————

Were these changes that you would have predicted?

In a way, I think that I always knew I wanted to pursue art/design, because design in Indonesia has been pretty recognized and supported for quite a while, so I kind of know how I would be going in that direction

Did you make these changes on purpose?

when i applied for NAFA, yes. But focusing more on design, no. It happened spontaneously because i got assigned in the graphics department during my internship.

—————————————————

Were they goals that you pursued or did they just happen to you?

Through these changes, I set out my own goals. I want to be more engaged to the world and help people more. It is also an act of helping myself by doing so.

Did they take you by surprise?

The changes did quite surprise me but Life is ever-changing and so are ourselves. Change is only natural.

What were the ripple effects of these changes

I think the changes in ourselves also happen in the world. if we already manage to experience and embrace the changes in ourselves, we get to see the changes in the world a bit clearer now.

When was the last time you look at something and thought about the process?

I recently watched 'Everything Everywhere All At Once" and I could not help to wonder the process of making the movie. I read the article of how the movie was created out of a considerably low budget, but managed to create something so brilliant and amazing.

A lot of things have been making me wonder these days. The way Singapore buses and MRT are designed. How Singapore got to this point. How Singapore Airlines has managed to be one of the best airlines in the world, with its great service design. How Jewels has managed to captivate the world with its green and nature concept in the middle of an airport.

I guess living in Singapore has pushed me to be more critical thinking, since the pace and competition here is very visible.

GROUP STEEP ANALYSIS

Personal STEEP Analysis

Research question : How will Indonesian independent cinemas survive amidst the rapid growth of licensed streaming culture?

Socio-Cultural :

When COVID-19 strikes, streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, DisneyPlus, Prime Video took the opportunity to "replace" theatres. It happened globally, and Indonesia is one of the countries that have been severely impacted by it.

Streaming services has become a culture now. People prefer to watch their movies remotely, rather than going to the cinema. Especially when Indonesia's film industry has not been showing some significant improvement, the people looked for entertainment from these streaming services. One of the societal effects I have seen is the increasing individualism within the society. They watch their movies remotely, without having to go to the cinema and that created an emotional gap between people. There has been a lack of connection and warmth between people. The one thing that connects us all now is trends from this streaming services, such as Netflix.

Though there are some positive impacts, such as exposure for Indonesian movies that are produced by Netflix. Netflix have been showing diverse movies from different countries, and Indonesia took that opportunity to create movies that people from all around the world can see. One of the big success is Penyalin Cahaya or Photocopier. Even other movies are being screened through Netflix, knowing how popular it can get. I think this affects the level of appreciation people might develop towards Indonesian movies.

Therefore, independent Indonesian cinemas are following the path of online streaming to maintain their audience. One of the independent cinemas in Indonesia is Kinosaurus.

Technological

Streaming services like Netflix allows people to access their movies through their phones, making it super convenient for the audience, especially the young generations. Contents are being distributed through many platforms such as laptop, television, even to social media platforms.

Economical

This is harmful to independent cinemas in Indonesia as they are losing their audience. Indonesian film industry is also of no help to raise the appreciation towards the Indonesian cinema. This affects the livelihood of Indonesian workers who used to work in cinemas.

Environmental

The amount of technology usage can create huge amount of carbon emissions, light and noise pollution.

Political

With the exposure to the global audience, Southeast Asian countries are now competing to produce the best movies to be showcased in streaming services, such as Netflix. This creates opportunities between Asian and Western countries to have collaborations. With the increasing interest of political topics in the entertainment, Indonesian movies are starting to showcase political messages in movies, provoking the young generations to be open-minded.

Other than that, one of the political aspects of the entertainment industry is the cultural clash. With Indonesia being exposed to these Western medias, their mindset and lifestyle are also affecting the young ones. Therefore, a lot of western platforms are being banned in Indonesia, such as PayPal, GMAIL, Google Drive, Steam, etc. This actually rather shows the insecurity of Indonesia of not being able to provide the people the convenient and innovative platforms. They are forcing the people to "love" local products when they do not actually help the people.
