Week 4 - Design Manifesto

Upon entering 4 years into the world of art & design, I have learned to appreciate human connection more. I tend to use my head instead of my heart. But now I know that feelings and emotions are as crucial as logic in the world of design. Creating design is to understand people, to represent them, and to provoke their feelings. A lot of good designs I found are able to make people feel things.

I think that to achieve that, human connection is deeply needed. So I always have this one principle in mind which goes "How would they feel about this?". It is a very simple principle, but it has helped my quite a lot when I'm crafting my work. If I have to create a whole design philosophy, it would take me years to craft the correct one, and even decades more to get the more precise one, as I also realize that every designer's work is a work in progress.

Connections are work in progress. We build them slowly, putting our trust in them. Believing and putting trust are the two things I find very difficult to do, as I am always used to work alone. But now, I understand that I cannot survive doing that. To make a good design, you need to put trust in your audience, like Natasha Jen said. Perceive them as these intelligent judgers that demand more and more. That way you can always see the gap in your work and improve more.

To conclude, my design manifesto will be constructed with these 3 important elements which are :

  1. Feel the way the audience would feel

  2. Every work is a work in progress

  3. Trust people through your work
